I was looking at the "non-medicinal" ingredients on a box of a brand name allergy medication. I was shocked to see only one active ingredient and over 4 "fillers" many of which had scary names like like "polyethylene glycol" and "titanium dioxide". So I went and looked up other popular over-the-counter meds and that darn "polyethylene glycol" kept popping up everywhere. The worst part for me is, there was no mention of the amount of that stuff was in the pill!
I mean, you have a pill, let's say it's a 25mg dose allergy pill. Have you ever seen 25mgs? Look at the size of the pill. It must be at least 1g in weight. So what's the other 975mgs made of? Hmmmm? Ah yes, those non-medicinal ingredients, of course. So I might be getting more of those than of the actual ingredient that will releave my symptoms, i see. So what if it's my exposure to those "non-medicinal" ingredients causing my symptoms? Thought so, can't really help me there can ya? Don't really care either do ya?
It so happens that, one little google search on "titanium dioxide" gave me some eye opening results folks. Here's a few:

What the heck is a highly toxic DuPont manufactured plastics pigment doing in our pills? Did you see that last description there? "Titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) pigments are white inorganic pigments used primarily in the production of paints". So what's it doing in over-the-counter meds? Is it a conspiracy with the pharmaceutical companies making these over-the-counter and prescription meds to slowly inject us with stuff that will make us break down so we have to turn to their pills to feel better eventually? You think I'm crazy for thinking this? But we've seen worse things being done.
Now for "polyethylene glycol" ...

Hmmm...laxative really? Interesting, considering it was in an allergy pill!!! Why put it there? What purpose does it serve?
This just proves my point even more. The more pills you take the worse you feel, yet you don't know why. Now we're starting to know why...

Polyethylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide...What are you doing in my pills?

Regarding Titanium Dioxide, its a non-toxic pigment. Most TiO2 produced is used in the paint industry as a pigment and as a way to add luster to the paint. There used to be another mineral that provided the same effect, lead, but, well, we all know how that turned out. TiO2 is inernt and, in addition to being used in paint, it is used as a whitener in paper, food, almost all toothpaste, sunscreen (its very good at absorbing UV spectrum light), and yes, some medication. Additionally, there was a study conducted in 2004 that the stuff aint toxic.

Now, yes, while the study was run independently, it was done so under the auspices of an industry group. so take that with whatever grain of salt that you like.
However, if you live in a city, drink unfiltered municiple water, eat any sort of ocean fish near the top of the food chain, factory farmed meat or really any vegetable that isnt organic (which is the VAST majority of people in the USA), then youre doing significantly more harm to your body than you are by ingesting that bit of TiO2 in your allergy pill. And frankly, if its that big of a deal to you, go with the homeopathhic alternative thats probably just as effective.
